2018 Conference

Holiness and Ethics in the 21st Century

Continental Theological Seminary

The 2018 venue was the Continental Theological Seminary, St-Pieters-Leeuw, Brussels. CTS is centred on a chateau, Rattendaal castle, whose history goes back to 1174. It boasts a campus with attractive grounds, including a lake. This setting made a fine backdrop to a wonderful conference. Nearly 70 people attended at least part of the conference, with most people there for the whole event. 20 papers were presented, and the audiences were so knowledgeable that the subsequent discussions were of consistently high quality. It was marvellous to see an increasing proportion of papers being given by women and by younger scholars. It was also good to see a broad representation from across Europe, both in terms of attendance and in terms of those giving papers. A particular highlight was an extended plenary session on the pastoral care of married homosexual couples. Of all the ethical issues discussed during the conference, this was the one that probably sparked the most interest and response.

As ever, the conference was conducted in an atmosphere of worship and fellowship, with times given to prayer and devotional reflection on the scriptures, as well as to song. EPTA is truly grateful to CTS for the welcome and hospitality it received from the seminary and its staff and students throughout the whole conference. We look forward to the next one!
